Week one of OKPreps high school football is officially underway as the defending 3A State Champions, #5 Heritage Hall Chargers, defeated the 2A runner-up, #20 Millwood Falcons, 47-24. The Sooners were well-represented in the matchup with #24K commit, three-star ATH Andy Bass, the quarterback for the Chargers, and #XXV commit, four-star wide receiver Jaden Nickens WR/DB for the Falcons.
Andy Bass threw his first touchdown pass of the season on the first drive, a 19-yard touchdown pass to tight end Rhett Davis. Then, following an interception, the Chargers took over on downs at their own nine-yard line. Andy Bass flashed his speed, going the distance for a 91-yard score; however, it was called back due to a penalty. The penalty did not matter for the Chargers as Bass connected with wide receiver Jordyn Harris on the deep ball only a few plays later for an 89-yard touchdown. Andy Bass opened up the first play of the second quarter with a 27-yard touchdown pass to his third different receiver, Rashaud Smith. Bass then put Heritage Hall up four scores midway through the second quarter, running one in for his first rushing touchdown of the year in which he flashed the "horns down."
The Millwood Falcons finally got on the scoreboard midway in the third quarter as running back Anthony Keys ran it in for a 1-yard score. The Falcons cut the deficit to 19 as Josiah Woods found Jaden Nickens for the two-point conversion. Andy Bass extended the Chargers' lead back to four possessions, rushing for his second touchdown (fifth overall) of the night on the ground, a 10-yard score. Heritage Hall added another touchdown to the scoreboard as running back Barrett Travis scored from two yards out. CJ Turnbull answered back for the Falcons, running in his first touchdown of the season. Turnbull followed it up with a 9-yard touchdown pass to Jaden Nickens. However, any chances of a comeback from Millwood were squandered as Andy Bass rushed for his third touchdown of the night (sixth overall) from 16 yards out. Andy Bass finished the night with over 400 yards of total offense, three passing touchdowns, three rushing touchdowns, and one fumble lost. If that performance isn't good enough for Player of the Week honors, I don't know what is.
I caught up with Andy Bass briefly following the game. Bass told The Crimson Captain the Chargers have been waiting for the season to start. "We've been grinding all summer, all offseason, through two a days, just getting ready for this moment," Bass said. He continued by saying, "The boys have been putting in the work every day; I couldn't be more proud of them, the o-line up front, the receivers, we got a ton of depth this year; I don't think anybody will be able to stop our offense." The two Sooners commits talked a bit heading into the matchup, "We were in the mentality that we are rivals this week, then after this, it's just straight Boomer Sooner!" Bass will attend the Sooners' season opener against Arkansas State, "I'll be there this weekend, and I'm sure I won't miss a home game this season." As a '24 commit, Bass will be recruiting for the Sooners each week, "We definitely have a few more guys we should get. I'm really trying to enjoy it all, enjoying my senior year, enjoying it with the boys at the OU games, just building that family." Andy Bass and the Chargers look to get revenge on the team that spoiled their chances at a perfect season last year, the Clinton Red Tornadoes, "That's the one game that's been circled on my calendar for a while now."
