Sooners Win Baseball Opener

Skip Johnson's squad got a 10-3 victory on Friday against the Texas Tech Red Raiders at Globe Life Field. The matchup served as the season opener for both programs at the Shriners Children's College Showdown in Arlington, TX.

The game was a defensive battle through the first four innings as both starting pitchers, Oklahoma’s Cameron Johnson and Texas Tech’s Jackson Burns, kept the bats quiet. However, the Sooners' offense exploded in the final three innings.

  • Mid-Game Momentum: The Red Raiders took an early 1–0 lead, but Oklahoma’s Camden Johnson crossed the plate during a double play in the fifth to tie the game.

  • The Long Ball: The Sooners’ power surge was led by Dayton Tockey, who launched a two-run homer in the sixth, followed by another two-run blast from Trey Gambill in the eighth to extend the lead to 5–2.

  • The Final Blow: Entering the ninth with a 5–3 lead, the Sooners erased any hope of a comeback. Brendan Brock delivered the game’s definitive moment with a massive grand slam capping a five-run inning.

Junior LHP Cameron Johnson navigated early pressure to limit the Red Raiders' damage. Johnson showcased significantly improved command compared to his previous season, keeping the Red Raiders' offense in check while the Sooners’ bats found their rhythm. Despite a rocky second inning where Texas Tech took an early 1–0 lead following two passed balls, Johnson allowed no further runs while recording 11 strikeouts, 3 hits, 3 walks through 6 innings.
